Weekly Rundown

I started a new schedule at work this week. Instead of 8:30 to 5:00, I work 6:15 to 2:45. I get out early, yay! But I also have to get up so very early!

This meant a total revamp of my exercise, since I usually do it in the morning before work. But I am not getting up at 3:30 am to work out (the girl whose hours I am replacing did, in fact, get up at 4 to exercise). If nothing else, the noise would drive my husband nuts.

Tuesday and Wednesday were quite hot, high 80s by the time I got out, so I had to rearrange my plan for those two days. I really wanted to run on Wednesday, but I decided my passing out on the side of the road just wasn’t a good thing.

Monday: off! That made it easy enough for my new schedule.

Tuesday: Car said it was 83 when I got out of work. So I ran on the treadmill–with a fan pointed at me. I only did about 1.5 miles, then decided I had lost enough water weight (sweat flowed freely, everywhere!). I followed up with 20  minutes of mostly stretchy yoga.

Wednesday: I hadn’t had a real run in several days, and I was feeling antsy. But I decided running in 84 degrees was just foolish, so I stayed inside and lifted weights. I am still doing  3×15, but I added a couple of new moves. I have been doing yoga in between reps, but that has been mostly stretch yoga to relax the muscles. This week I added some actual strength poses, and held for 5 breaths between my reps.

Thursday: I went for a short run,  just 2 miles. How nice that now feels like a light day. The weather was still a little warm, but the run felt great. I wanted to push a little, and my first mile was 11:11, which is 29 seconds faster than any other first mile so far this season–on that route or otherwise.. My second mile was 10:30, which is about 10 seconds slower my normal, but still faster than the first. Which is funny as I told myself if I ran consistently in the first mile, I could slow down on the way back…..

Friday: I ran at the hospital before coming home. I figure I might be doing that a bit, as by the time I get home there are all sorts of reasons why I won’t have energy or will to exercise. The hospital has a nice walk around it, about .90 miles, as well as a trail through the field behind the hospital. It has some side buildings as well, and after I went through the field, around the hospital, up to the Cancer Center and back to the field, I managed 3.1 miles.

Saturday: I had to work again (oh, these 6 day weeks!), but it was a “short” day–only 6 hours. After grabbing some groceries, I came home and sat. And read. And sat. Finally I got up and walked Miss Daisy. She had a great time, and we went a bit further than we usually go when we walk this particular route. My husband passed us on the way home, and we hitched a lift. I knew Daisy would be terribly excited to have a car stop and get a ride home.  And she was!

Sunday: a run, a real run! I had no idea how far I was going when I went out. My knee hurt running at the hospital–I don’t think the sidewalk has the rubber additive the roads seem to have now, so it was harder to run on. The fast run on Thursday may not have helped either. It twinged off and on throughout the walk Saturday, so I figured I would just go as far as felt good. I planned to hit at least 2 miles. But the run felt fabulous, and I actually did a 5 mile run! It was a slow 5 miles, most of the miles around 10:30, but I find I can live with that. Especially since I was still running stong with good form when I hit my driveway.
