Weekly Rundown 5/27-6/2

Last week seemed so quick! It was still dreary, but warmer. I got to walk outside during my break almost every day. And my running streak started. 

I don’t run every day, I usually plan to let my knees rest before stressing them again. But I was curious to see if I (my knees) could do it, and hey, it’s only a mile! After doing a Burpee Challenge–two, actually–and committing to yoga everyday for a month, it seemed like it was time I did a running challenge!

Monday: Memorial Day, so it was a day off from work. I hopped on Charby early (6:30 AM) again, and rode on the road for 20 minutes.  She was surprisingly cooperative before her breakfast. The Runners World Streak started, so of course after my ride I did a simple 2 mile run. My legs are going to be super strong after riding without a saddle and then running. It didn’t bother them as much as the first time 🙂 Improvement already!

Tuesday: a quick run before work. Since I am running everyday, I decided I should focus on form and speed while on the treadmill. I ran my mile in 8:38, which isn’t terribly speedy, but a good start. 

Wednesday: another mile before work (in a similar time), with a set of squats and heel raises after. Burpees seem to help my knees, I think they strengthen the muscles and tendons. I figure squats and heel raises should be a similar enough movement to help as well. Still doing Burpees too–but heel raises and squats are easier.

Thursday: and another quick mile before work. I usually start the treadmill at 6.0 MPH and work my way up in speed, but I decided to try starting at 7.0 and seeing if knocking out the minutes it takes to get to 7.0 from 6.0 helped my time. It seemed to, as my mile was 8:13.

Friday: I had to go to town for errands, so I decided I might as well run on the Rail Trail.  I took Daisy for a quick walk first, so she wouldn’t feel too bad about being left behind. We did a brisk 1.4  miles in 22 minutes. After my multitude of errands, I ran 4 miles in 39:26 on the Augusta end of the Trail. It was a difficult run, I guess my legs were tired. Imagine my surprise when my app informed me I’d had the best time for a 5K (29:55) so far this year.  After two more stops, all I really wanted to do was go home, put everything away and eat. What I got to do was go home and pull porcupine quills out of Bruce. Apparently he tangled with a baby that morning, and we hadn’t noticed as the pieces sticking out were white in his white fur–and he didn’t act like anything was wrong. Fortunately, there were only about eleven, and since it was a baby, they were fairly small and flexible. Not that that made his leg feel any better.

Saturday: Following my plan, I got on Christopher Robin nice and early and took him out. He was happy to explore, and we went further down the road than I had planned.  I followed that with 18 minutes of good stretch-y yoga, then we headed out to hang out with our boat for the day. It was cloudy, but warm (ish) and dry, and we got a lot of projects at the marina taken care of before taking her out for a short ride and dinner. How fun to run up the river five minutes, dock and walk to the restaurant. Definitely a better commute than a car.

Sunday: Still warmish, but not dry. I took Daisy out for a walk and it started sprinkling at the end of my driveway. Deciding not to be put off, we kept going. By the time we reached the top of the hill, it was a bit steadier, but at that point I was annoyed at the weather and we were walking, dang it! So we did just a hair over a mile, and not even that fast–17 minutes. Daisy didn’t mind, she trotted along happy as could be. I came back and ran my mile (in 7:55, apparently that rain got me fired up), did some Burpees and weights. Since I seem unable to convince myself to do more reps (I really don’t like weights), I chose a heavier dumbbell.

Weekly Rundown 5/20-5/26

Another week with mostly lousy weather. I expect spring will warm us up eventually. I did get to do most of what I wanted to do outdoors, as there were more clouds than actual rain.

Monday: I always rough out my week ahead of time so I don’t forget what to do by the time I get to Wednesday or Thursday.  But this week I forgot what I had planned on Monday! I planned on weights and yoga before work; but as I stumbled down the stairs, still  half asleep–I drink the coffee after the workout–I automatically headed for the treadmill. After a quick mile, some squats and heel raises, I realized I was doing the wrong thing. (Not that any exercise is ever wrong.)

Tuesday: another morning run, 2 miles this time. I wanted to take Daisy out for a walk after work, but Mother Nature was not helpful and it was both raining and thundering when I got home. My treadmill miles are getting faster, however, and that makes me happy. Both miles this morning were sub-nine minutes. Now I just need to translate that out on the road!

Wednesday: I finally got around to doing weights. I didn’t do any yoga (beyond the normal stretching after), but I did 2 reps with Burpees in between the sets and plank after. I started with a lunge stretch I saw in Runners World that looked sooooo simple. But my legs didn’t think so! Step back into lunge, and hold while stretching forward twice. Then stretch to each side, twist at the waist to face each direction and straight up. Follow by switching legs and repeating on the other side. Then convince your body to do it’s normal workout.

Thursday: I planned on taking the day off, but maybe a ride at night. However, my plans were derailed (again. Are you sensing a pattern here?), and I ended up helping to clean the boat so we could put it in for the holiday weekend.

Friday: I was heading down to see my mom, who lives an hour and half south of me. I did an easy 3 mile run on the treadmill before heading out with Daisy. My mom has her sister from the same litter, and they like to see each other. Although, to be fair, Daisy is always happy to see any puppy.   
My mom’s cat threw her, I don’t think she has ever seen a cat before and he is probably twice her size. And fluffy! He’s a long hair Norwegian Forest cat. Beautiful, but a bit intimidating to my girl.  Fortunately, he treated her with true feline disdain as she sniffed around him.         
And it was amazing that a simple 90 minute trip gained me 14 degrees of warmth, and the sun. I found the sun! Unfortunately, I forgot my sunglasses.

Saturday: I decided that I needed to start riding early now that boating season is under way.  Last year I had a hard time balancing trying to exercise while being in the boat as much as possible. The horses, in particular, lost out. So, much to Charby’s chagrin, I went out and hopped on at 6:30 in the morning before their breakfast (and mine). We did a short ride out on the road and she was surprisingly good. I also discovered to bonuses to riding that early: less bugs and no cars. Afterwards Daisy and I took a 2.84  mile walk with a friend with a retired Greyhound on the Rail Trail. He walked so lackadaisically, her quick little steps matched his super long legs easily and we had a marvelous walk. And, of course, in the afternoon there was the boat ride.

Sunday: I went for a long run. I’d like to say it was a long, easy run, but it is a fairly difficult course. The first mile is roughly 80% uphill, and the second mile is mostly downhill, but that means–you guessed it–the third mile is uphill again. And there are some serious hills: in the first mile one hill is half mile long, the third mile is mostly a gradual rise to a bit shorter, but much steeper end. Of course, the best part is the fourth mile is downhill 🙂 And I was happy that I knocked 3 minutes off my first attempt at this route,  47 minutes for the 4.57 mile run.

 

Rundown 4/1-4/7

A whole new month already!

Weather was actually (fairly) decent and I not only got in some walks outside at work, but Daisy got some walking in too.

I also started my Yoga Challenge with a few friends. I always feel better after I yoga, but I don’t always push for the time to practice. Too many other things pulling on me. This way, I have to do it, because I am fairly compulsive about being challenged to do, well, anything.

Monday: a quick mile run on the treadmill to start my work week, and yoga to relax when I got home.

Tuesday: I went outside during my break and did a rapid walk around three-quarters of the hospital. I only get 15 minutes, it is fun to see how far I can get and still return to work presentable (and not, um, fragrant). It was still nice when I got home, so I snagged Daisy and we did a fairly brisk (16:30) mile walk. I didn’t really want to, but having her little face made me see the need to get her out and I felt soooo much better after. Hopefully she did too!

Wednesday: off, but I did do my Yoga. For the first week, I am holding each pose for 3 breaths, and it takes about 10 minutes. And a great way to relax when I get home from my chaos at work.

Thursday: weight day. No enthusiasm before I went to work, so I had to do it while dinner was cooking. I did only do 1 rep of 20, but I added 10 Burpees with push ups and 20 “plank roll-ups.” I got those out of a magazine a couple of years ago and throw them in every once in a while to make sure I can still do them. Start in plank, and raise one leg, holding yourself with the other. Walk your hands back and stand up fully on the grounded leg with knee bent on the lifted leg, then bend over and walk your hands back into plank. Excellent for both core and balance! If I feel like cheating, I switch legs with each roll-up, but on this night I did 10 on each leg without switching.

Friday: Took Daisy out first thing before the ice melted into mud (I try to avoid her getting wet and cold halfway through the walk) and we did just over 2 miles in 35 minutes. I decided we were ready for the big hill and walked half way down Blinn before turning around and heading up towards home. When we got back, I went down to the treadmill and ran my 30 minute, 2.5 mile preset interval workout. Finished, of course, with the Yoga Challenge.

Saturday: Another early walk with Daisy, a little shorter and easier so she had a recovery day. Like us, we can’t expect dogs to sleep all winter and then hop up and do excessive amounts of exercise without soreness. So I am trying to work her into it and keeping an eye on her for any stiffness. She will go as far as I let her, so it is up to me to make sure she doesn’t hurt herself. In the afternoon I went grocery shopping and took a run on the Rail Trail, since it starts right in the parking lot of the store. Wasn’t sure how far I was going to run, although I can always go further on the Trail, as it so much flatter than the terrain around my house. I ended up doing an exact 5K (yes, I ran off the trail around the parking lot until I hit 3.1). It felt really good and the weather was lovely. Plenty of people also had the idea of playing on the Trail, and there were happy dogs and kids and bikers everywhere. Made for a very positive run. And I wore way too much and was very hot by the time I made it back to the car. I stretched briefly before getting in the car, then completed my Yoga Challenge practice when I got home.

Sunday: I took Daisy out in the sunshine for another 2 mile walk. She was still on a tear, even after the previous days and we did the 2 miles in 35:22. Probably would have been even faster if we didn’t stop to sniff. And take pictures. Then I helped my husband for a few hours cleaning up the barnyard with the tractor. He moved the manure pile, and then we worked on some irrigation as one of the field streams had re-routed itself through the barnyard. And then into our driveway, which made quite a mess. It took a route under my hay barn, ruining the bottom layer of hay bales as well. Eventually we came, muddy and tired, and had lunch. It wasn’t until after dinner I realized I hadn’t done my Yoga Challenge, and it was the last day of the week, so I couldn’t do it the next day. I got up from my chair and did the 10 minute routine (it might have taken 8 that time!) before plopping back down.

Rundown 3/25-3/31

We had a bit of rain in our area, so I didn’t get to walk Daisy in the evenings as planned. On the bright side, it wasn’t snow! It was a good week, just cool and damp.

I keep threatening the horses with actual work, but the weather has not cooperated. The ice has given way to mud, so I still don’t have a good spot to exercise them. I have let them out in the  back field and enjoyed the thundering hooves up the hillside. Christopher Robin is a nimble little guy, I think there were points in his twisting bucks that all four feet were off the ground. Char was happy just to race up the hill and immediately start nosing the brown grass hopefully while ignoring his antics.

Monday: off 🙂

Tuesday: A morning run on the treadmill, 2 miles in 17 flat. Which is odd, I never hit flat even numbers! My OCD quite appreciated it. Doubtful that I will ever do it again. It was a good start to a very busy day at work.

Wednesday: A brisk walk in the morning before work. 1 mile in 13.03 minutes, followed by Burpees. I am quite proud they are still part of my regimen, given how much I dislike them! I did 15, some of them with push-ups for extra credit.

Thursday: A bit of a time crunch before work, but I did manage to get in a quick 1 mile run with a little stretching afterwards. Some days it is just hard to get up, feed the horses, exercise and still get ready for work. I have started making my lunch the night before, which is helpful both time-wise and not tripping over my husband–and he over me–as he makes his lunch in the morning.

Friday: an exercise in why we should be flexible in our workouts. I started my #5 preset workout on the treadmill. It has about 3 minutes of warm up walking with 2.5 miles of interval running and 3 minutes of cool down after. I made the running about a minute and then decided I really just didn’t want to do it. My stomach was not enjoying the bouncing (although it had felt fine up til that point) and my knees were cranky and I decided to simply walk instead. I did 30 minutes, the first 15 minutes with 1 lb weights, the second mile in 12:30, and a final few moments slowing down as the cool down. So much better than running, and still a good workout!

Saturday: Took Daisy out for a walk, and she was ready to go! We did 2.12  miles in 35:44, and that is because she had the lead straight out between us the entire way.  17 minute miles are pretty good when one considers the hills we went up. When we got home, she found the couch and I went downstairs to the treadmill. I tried the same preset workout from the day before, and it felt MARVELOUS. What a difference a day makes.

Sunday: I started with Burpees (again!), 10 with push ups, then a quick 1 mile run at 7.0 MPH. I did do a 3 minute warm up and cool down on either side of the mile, then finished off with a set of 15 reps of weights. And, of course, stretching. I do love my stretching after!

Weekly Rundown, 3/18-3/24

This week seemed to fly by! And the weather got nicer and nicer. Well, warmer and warmer, we did have a bit of rain. Dang, I hate mud season.

First there is there’s ice so I can’t ride, and now there is the mud, so I have nowhere to exercise them. Blech. But I did get to run outside, so progress is being made. Not so much for Daisy, our dirt road was too muddy for her to walk on often. But soon.

Monday: mostly off. I did do 16 minutes of stretching yoga when I got home for work. Absolutely made me feel better 🙂 Just the few minutes of breathing and simple stretches relaxed me and made me ready to take on the week. Which was good, since we were super busy at the lab!

Tuesday: a morning workout before I headed to the office. I decided to keep doing those Burpees. I think they not only help my core, but my knees seem more flexible too. Definitely worth doing, so I started with 10, ran 2 quick miles (17:26) and did 10 more Burpees (sans push ups this time).

Wednesday: another morning workout. So nice to get it out of the way and not have to figure out how to fit in exercise when I get home from work. Especially with feeding the horses, dogs and hubby 😛 I did weights, 1×20 and 1×15 reps, before ending with some stretching.

Thursday: planned another morning run, but ran into a time crunch instead. So when I got home I grabbed Daisy and my husband and we did a lazy mile walk. It was nice to get her out and watch her sniff!

Friday: finally, a day out! I did my personal “5k” route and noticed immediately the difference between an open route in Maine and a treadmill! But the hills just added to the fun of being outside, and I was very happy when I got home. Especially since each mile was a hair faster than the previous.

Saturday: once more I started with Burpees, 10 of them (with push ups). Then I walked a brisk 13:39 mile on the treadmill before finishing with 2×20 weights and yoga. A great way to start my day. We took off Portland and the Boat Builders Show and gawked at some really cool boats. Two bathrooms!! And classic wood everywhere.

Only one bathroom, but two bedrooms and a sunroof!

Sunday: another walk, this one 2 miles at a fairly brisk pace on the treadmill. Then a slightly longer yoga practice, 21 minutes. Left me feeling pretty wonderful. Which was great, because then I had to clean the house!

Weekly Rundown 3/11-3/17

Teases of spring this week 🙂

I was able to walk outside in the afternoons on my breaks without my coat and without freezing! Then, naturally, Thursday morning we got up to 4 inches of snow. Snow showers overnight indeed.

Best thing about March is that snow melts quickly.

Monday: off

Tuesday: a quick mile on the treadmill in the morning. I stretched out with 7 minutes of yoga afterwards, before getting ready to trudge off to work.

Wednesday: I decided to go a little further before work, running 2 miles in 17.44. I really need to start working on my milege. Doing just 2 miles seems so short to me, and I would like to get up to 15-20 miles a week this summer. If my knees cooperate. I don’t foresee doing a 100 mile month, but that would be so cool. Just once. Maybe a good goal for September?

Thursday: I am trying to work weights back into my rotation. I have been kinda ignoring strength training over the winter. But I know it will help my running and keep me balanced, so I did just a bit before work. I love mixing my yoga with the weights. I start in mountain pose and do some stretching of my arms and legs, then do my first set (okay, so I only did one set, but it was 1 x 20!). I break the sets by my “3-way plank”– a regular plank for 5 breaths, then one arm planks on each side for 5 breaths. A set is five moves, three arm moves alternated with two leg moves. I generally do 2 sets, but, as I said, I have been slacking big time. I finish with Down Dog and Warrior before floor stretches.

Friday: I was so tired. Not sure exactly what I did this week, but it hit me on Friday. I get Fridays off, and I had no ambition at all. I wanted a longer run, and even thought about going to the Rail Trail for an outside run. But Mother Nature brought in some rain and sitting in a chair reading sounded so much better. That also put the kabash on walking Daisy. Fortunately she likes the chair too. I managed to drag myself up around mid morning, ran some errands in town with the pups, then came home and read a little more. Finally, in late afternoon, I did get on the treadmill and did 3.6 miles, which was about what I wanted. I finished off with some Burpees (yup, I figured I should still do those occasionally) and stretching before getting around to house cleaning and dinner.

Saturday: we went snowmobiling, probably for the last time this season. There is still a ton of snow up north, off trail was probably two and half feet deep. Since I am only five feet, I tried hard to stay on trail! It was bright and shiny when we got on the sleds, but when we got up into the mountains the clouds came out, the wind gusted and snow flew.  Had a great time! I did do a brisk mile walk on the treadmill, with intervals of carrying weights, before we left. Of course, my Fitbit counts steps as I ride the sled. Since I am fighting to steer and shifting weight for curves, not to mention holding on with my legs–and standing when the trail got quite rough, which was a lot that day–I think I am going to take all those steps. As we were in the mountains, the Fitbit also thought I climbed 408 floors, which is pretty amusing 🙂 And still, after all of that, I wasn’t as tired as I was on Friday!

 

Sunday: Mother Nature ruined my plans once more. The sky was bright but the air was cool and the wind was biting. I managed to take Daisy for a mile walk, but I decided the treadmill was a better place for my run. It was one of those days when I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I got on the treadmill. Once I got past 2 miles, I thought it would be nice to run a 5k. So I did! I had also planned on stripping the horses, and lunging them to get some early spring work in. However, the wind is so brutal, it seemed mean to take their blankets off. Also, I didn’t really want to stand outside while lunging them. They didn’t seem to mind taking the day off.

Weekly Rundown

Another week where I learned my body will always get what it wants. Sometimes I just need to listen. I decided that since I was doing pretty much all treadmill, I should use the incline so that the hills weren’t such an obstacle in the spring. My knees did NOT agree. I did it twice before realizing that I should maybe not do that.

Monday:off.

Tuesday: I got on the treadmill before work and tried a mile at the incline. When I got the ‘mill, I believe it said it had two incline levels. Never have figured out how to do more than the one, and I am not sure of the degree of the incline. But I did a mile at 6MPH, keeping in mind that going to fast isn’t good for my knees. It seemed to go fairly well.

Wednesday: didn’t get up early enough to exercise so hopped on the treadmill when I got home from work. I am always so proud of myself when I exercise after a ten-hour day! Not that I did all that much, just 1 mile walk and then 14 minutes of stretch-y yoga. But I did, in fact, do it.

Thursday: another morning run at the incline. I kept the same goal, just 1 mile at 6 MPH.

Friday: my day off, so normally I do a long run. But I went out to do errands early in the day, and I was exhausted by the afternoon. I did go out and clean the horse stall, and that actually took about 2000 steps, not to mention the weight of tossing the manure. They had been busy!

Saturday: Still bouncing back from the week, I decided to do one of the preset runs on the treadmill. I did 30 minutes, that ended  up being about 2.65 miles. I followed up with a 10 minute walk at 3.0 MPH.

Sunday: I had planned another long run, but the knees were definitely not feeling good at that point. So I did another preset, a walk that does a mile in 20 minutes, and continued another 10 minutes after. Realizing that I hadn’t done weights yet during the week (they are the easiest thing for me to forget), I did 2 x 20 session.

Weekly Rundown

Another week flew by.  I have still been exercising six days a week, but I think my sessions have been both shorter and easier.

In other words, I have been slacking!

I did try this week to reverse that trend. It was a good start anyway 🙂

Monday: planned day off

Tuesday: off–the power went out as I was getting dressed for the treadmill.  It lasted just long enough to have alarm go off, and hear about two seconds of the morning news announcer before that horrible absence of all sound filled the house. I had to feed the horses,  wash a bit and try to do something with my hair by flashlight before trotting off to work. Fortunately, it was back on by the time I got home, so my evening went as planned (albeit without exercise).

Wednesday: I did a preset workout on the treadmill, with interval speeds for 20 minutes that equaled one mile. But I didn’t feel it was quite hard enough.

Thursday: Another walk on the treadmill, 1.18 miles at 3.0 to 3.8 MPH. Definitely not hard enough.

Friday: Hopped on the treadmill for a more difficult workout. Did a preset for 40 minutes that totaled 3.74 miles, with 3.5 of that running at 5.3 MPH and 6.5 intervals. I carried 1 lb weights during the slower intervals, and felt sooo very marvelous when I finished.

Saturday: Realizing that I really hadn’t done much with weights recently–I only do them because I feel it helps my running and is good for me–I thought I should break them out. I did 23 minutes of my arm/leg routine, with two reps. I seem to be having an issue doing three reps, so I am just increasing the number in the reps. Funny how we trick ourselves, isn’t it? I mixed in some stretch-y yoga in as well to help  my muscles actually move the next day after not having lifted in forever.

Sunday: I did a free form workout on the treadmill. I did a short walking warm-up, 20 minutes running and then a cool down for a total of 45 minutes.  As much as I don’t like having to track how long I have been on the treadmill for speed changes (it just makes the workout take forever, which is one reason I enjoy the presets. They make me work harder without having to pay attention to how long I have been on there), this one seemed to go fairly quickly and felt pretty good.

Weekly Rundown

I had absolutely no ambition last week.

I think the busyness of the last month had finally caught up to me. So my work out life wasn’t terribly exciting–I even took two days off and didn’t care! Halfway through the week my husband decided that perhaps we should just have an  “at home” weekend. I gratefully agreed.

Monday: the first day off

Tuesday: a fairly easy day, weights mixed with yoga. I did my 2×15 reps with planking in between the sets. I do three arm moves alternated with two leg strengtheners, and then my  “3 way” plank–regular plank held for five, then one arm plank held for five on each side to “rest” the muscles before starting the next rep . When I first started, I kept both sets of toes on the floor for balance, but now I can stack my feet properly and not fall over. And a friend just told me about the “star” plank, where one lifts the top leg as well as the arm. New goal!

Wednesday: my alarm went off at the proper time, but instead of hitting snooze, I apparently turned it off. Thankfully, my husband asked if it was ever going to go off again. Unfortunately, that was about 45 minutes later! So we rushed around, getting ready for work, and the exercise plan went out the window. When I got home I hopped on the treadmill for quick 8:35 mile, followed by 3 minutes of a cool down walk and a bit of stretching.

Thursday: I decided I was just too wiped and took it off as my second day.

Friday: I had decided I should start do more hill work, so I did Blinn Hill bottom to top. Twice. Turns out running to Blinn, then down it and back up twice and then home is a nice little 5 mile run. I did the second time just over a minute faster, and my mile home was the fastest mile of the run. Which proved what I always have maintained: I am a long distance runner. The longer I run, the stronger I get. Or maybe I was just happy it was almost over!
I rested a bit, then had to get the hay barn organized. It’s haying season and my husband had brought home twenty-five bales and just emptied the truck at the front of the barn. I had to get them all stacked at the back of the barn for the fifty we were going to get that night. A very sweaty forty minutes later, I decided I would just lunge Christopher Robin and do some ground work instead of a full ride.

Saturday:  I did some weeding my garden and got it organized–tomato trellis’, herbs out of the greenhouse into the garden, slug hunt. While weeding I found some volunteer tomato plants from last year. I didn’t think tomatoes could make it through the winter here in Maine. Just goes to show, life will find a way! I trellised them and am waiting to see which ones they are, as I did Roma, cherry and some full-size reds last year. I took Charby out for a quick ride up and down the road with the bareback pad. Using the pad is comfy and makes my legs work harder. After I did my weights ( 2×15) mixed with yoga.

Sunday: I had planned  a long run for the day. But I was not feeling it at all. So I decided a run on the treadmill would work well. I did one of the presets, a 30 minute run with varying speeds. It was a good decision as the run felt fabulous.
Later in the afternoon I took Daisy down to introduce her to the boat. She had been in our last one once, and I have never taken her swimming, so she got a new life jacket before we went out. I put it on her and took her to the gangplank down to the dock.  She needed encouragement  to step on the ramp, and then she froze. I had to carry her down to the dock, where she revived enough to trot down to the boat. After sniffing every inch of the boat and going down the dock to the other ramp, she raced right back to the first ramp and down it like a pro. What a funny dog!

Due to a small technical issue — and the fact that it’s summertime and I didn’t have the time or energy to fix said issue in a timely fashion — this is really last week’s previous week’s rundown.

Last week was a good week, but a bit chaotic. There is an event in Boothbay Harbor each that my husband and I used to go to regularly, but we have slipped in the last few years between injuries and jobs.

With our new boat, we planned an overnight trip down to Boothbay  on Wednesday.  As usual, however, Mother Nature did not cooperate and we were forced to come back on Wednesday instead of hanging out til Thursday.  Since we were determined to do an overnight in the boat, we went back Friday afternoon and stayed until Saturday.

And, of course this messed a bit with my scheduled exercise. The weather also messed with it, as it was just a bit warm. I gave the horses the weekend off. When it gets hot and humid, it just too much to ask for them to put on tack over their fur coats and then carry me around at varying paces. I tried to beat the heat by doing my routines in the morning, which also cramped the length of them. But at least something got done.

Monday: since I knew we’d be out on Thursday, I didn’t take the day off like I usually do.  I did do it when I got home from work, but since it was just yoga the heat didn’t bother me. And stretching after a busy day at work felt great.

Tuesday: I hopped on the treadmill for a 10 minute mile, then picked up my weights for 2 reps of 15.  I mixed the weights with some stretchy yoga and I was ready for my day!

Wednesday: I got on the treadmill early as we planned on leaving on the boat first thing in the morning. I did a quick 2 miles before we headed down to the marina. We were about the only ones on the water–although I did spy a deer looking at us from the river’s edge.  Besides a few seals, the river was smooth and empty.  After a lovely trip we arrived in Boothbay harbor.  We cruised around a little to the outer bays, then settled in at our mooring to watch the ships come in.

Thursday: I got on the treadmill first thing in the morning since we were home. I had planned on doing one of the preset workouts I hadn’t done in a while, but as soon as the treadmill leapt from a walking pace (3.4 MPH) to the first running pace (6.2 MPH), my knee rebelled. I tried it twice before throwing in the towel and just running at 5.0 MPH. It took a few minutes, but my knee sorted itself out and I ran 2 miles before walking for 9 minutes as a cooldown, followed by 11 minutes of stretchy yoga.

Friday: I had planned to do some hill running, but got sidetracked into planting the last of the Christmas trees and our pumpkin patch. It was pretty warm and two hours  later I was dripping sweat and my legs were shaky.  I figured that was enough exercise for one day!

Saturday: we had come back down to Boothbay and slept in the boat. After waking up and enjoying the calm ocean while drinking the coffee my husband had percolated, he took me to  land and I went for a run around the harbor.  I could feel how warm the day was going to get, but the air was pretty nice as I ran; and the views were spectacular (I had to keep stopping to take pictures!)

Sunday: finally, a day off! I did try kayaking for the first time and paddled around for 40 minutes or so. My first pass I believe I looked a bit drunk, as my kayak could not find a straight line. But, I didn’t dump myself and I did kinda figure it out. It was a blast too! Definitely hooked.
